Clarify and create your intentions

Over the weekend I was listening to a speech for MLK Day and the concept of cosmic companionship was repeated over and over. While it was something Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about often, it wasn’t a phrase I had ever heard. And I liked it.

Maybe because I like alliteration.

And maybe because I like both the reminder of the cosmic world around us and the idea of companionship so being in companionship with the cosmic world feels comforting to me.

Last week I had so much fun leading multiple workshops on 2023 intention and goal setting. I love to support people in dreaming big and stepping into the visions they desire for themselves.

This coming week we’ll be moving onto the part of the process that is stepping into that vision, which entails talking about the science of behavior change.

What does that mean?

Learning the neurological logistics of why change can feel so hard.

Why we sabotage ourselves from the things we want.

And the power we have to make it all easier just by simply understanding the process.

One of those reasons has to do with cosmic companionship.

When creating goals and working out out how to achieve them, we often feel like we have to figure everything out on our own. And that can feel like a scary and overwhelming job.

But in truth, our only job is the what and the why.

What do you want?

Why do you want it?

The when, the where and the how it all unfolds is actually not your job.

(Trust me, once you start trying to take control of those things you’re actually moving yourself further away from your goal, not closer.)

That’s where the cosmic companionship comes in. Call it the Universe, the cosmos, God, something bigger than yourself. Call it whatever you want.

When you figure out the what and the why, your cosmic companionship conspires to figure out the rest.

At that point your job is to trust.

And for us humans, trust can be hard.

Our brains believe that the way we stay safe is to control every tiny little detail of our lives as much as possible. But the more we try to control, the more we cut off our connection to that cosmic companionship.

The breath we can exhale because we are confident in the knowledge that we don’t have to do it all alone.

We are supported.

Here are some thought provoking questions to help clarify and create your what and why.

  • What was remarkable about this past year? How did you react to it?

  • What limiting beliefs or stories have you been carrying with you?

  • What have these beliefs cost you? What experiences have you missed out on by holding onto them?

  • What are you ready to let go of

  • What is ready to let go of you?

  • How do you want the next year to be different?

  • What do you want to experience or achieve over the next year?

  • How do you want to feel?

Whatever your goals are this year, figure out your what and your why and then get quiet. Listen and take inspired action trusting that it’s all happening and coming to you even if you can’t see it yet.
