What’s your favorite number?

Anyone who’s been friends with me long enough knows my obsession with numbers. And most likely is also someone who texts me when they see 11:11 or 2:22 or 5:55, or any other repeating numbers on the clock.
Numbers, like anything in life, each have their own meaning and vibration. When a number shows up multiple times, it strengthens the power of those meanings and vibrations.

And there is a school of thought that believes when you see repeating numbers, whether on the clock, building addresses, train cars, etc., it’s a sign from the Universe of your connection to and support from it. And seeing those numbers is an indication you’re on the right path, so it’s a good time to pause and consider what you were thinking about or doing right before you saw them.

If you weren’t already aware, today happens to be 2/22.  Last year on the palindrome of 2/22/22 there were a plethora of weddings as the 5 repeating 2’s were a date so rare, it won’t happen again for 400 years.

The meaning of the number 2, not surprisingly, has to do with partnership. It also has to do with dualities and balance.

Each of us is individually made up of dualities.

Our ego and our higher self

Our masculine energy and our feminine energy

Our brain and our heart

Our love for self and love for others.

Instead of these dualities being things that divide us, they are actually the things that keep us balanced.

Like magnets with opposite polarities, when they pull equally, we end up centered.

But that’s the tricky thing about balance, sometimes the best way to find it is by falling out of balance.

Years ago, I taught kids yoga. We played a game where we would come into tree pose holding hands so that we were supporting one another and at the end we would allow ourselves to all fall down together.

The sheer joy and amount of giggles from the children at that moment was always guaranteed to be infectious. They LOVED falling down. When I teach tree pose to adults I have come up with a list of tricks to TRY to get them to fall.

Sometimes we move our arms.

Sometimes we sway from side to side or bend forward and backwards.

Sometimes we close our eyes.

Adults don’t find falling fun. In fact, we often have a fear of falling.

We focus on trying to be perfect.

Trying to control.

And trying to stay within the boundaries of what we know is safe.

That’s where kids are smarter than adults.

Falling down is actually the way we strengthen our ability to balance.

It’s how our body learns what is too far.

What will knock us off center.

And helps us strengthen the reflexes and muscles we need to stay in balance next time.

By not letting ourselves fall we miss the learning, the growth and the chance to come back into even better balance.

When it comes to the #2 and the idea of partnership, falling in love sometimes feels like the scariest kind of falling.

And it can also feel like the most fun.

Love knocks us off balance in ways that can make us feel more fulfilled and can actually bring us back into better balance in the end.

Whether it’s with ourselves or with another person, we are meant to be in partnership. To embrace our dualities. All the variations of the two sides of ourselves.

As my adult student’s are “practicing” falling with their eyes closed, I always encourage them to keep their eyes closed.

To trust that it’s safe to fall.

To trust that they will catch themselves.

And to remember that each fall only makes us stronger.

Practice this routine to help you more easily process the emotion of fear, whether it's around falling or anything else.
